Assessing nocturia in clinical trials

Svetlana Avulova , Jeffrey P Weiss

Nocturia is a disease of multifactorial etiology affecting both men and women. The purpose of this article is to review the outcome of clinical trials for treatment of nocturia. Therapy of nocturia due to nocturnal polyuria includes timed diuretics, positive airway pressure and desmopressin where clinically indicated. Patients with nocturia due to bladder storage problems have been treated with anticholinergics resulting in little demonstrable overall benefit, although such investigations have not been powered to determine the effect of this class of medications specifically in patients with nocturnal urgency. Therapy for nocturia owing to benign prostatic hyperplasia includes a-blockers and 5a-reductase inhibitors, with variable outcomes. Future treatment for nocturia mandates well-designed clinical trials to determine the efficacy of cause-specific approaches
